that kind of range would be nice if the price is affordable.

Waitin to see where the market sectors developmight sound like a good idea, butleaves them in the dust for initial rollout with eagerly awaiting customers. But at least they have models in the pipeline.

Though the entry form said there was ample room for the headline, it cropped out something; the headline reads "Ford's Electric Vision: New Hybrids, 700 Mile-Range PHEV by 2012".
700-mile range by 2012, got it?
Chevy's Volt and MPV5 will go about 300 miles before pausing briefly at a gas station to take on less than 13 gallons to continue the journey at relatively high mileage per gallon of gasoline. Using gas, the Volt will go for miles and miles... until the driver can't take it any more.
Wouldn't it be nice if people refreshed their knowledge? I'm always willing to change my opinion when presented credible new information. That's why the judges recognized me as an expert witness in state and federal courtrooms.
Remember what Mark Twain said; “If you don't read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed.”

Absolutely fascinating history! I'm from the Detroit area, grew up at a time when "everyone but *every*one" in town made a living connected somehow to the auto industry, but I never knew this history about electric vehicles! I was alive then, too -- albeit just a tyke in '67. This is more info to add to the discussion even my former classmates push regarding the supposed conspiracy to impede development of electric vehicles (and alternative fuels). I've always insisted that the decision makers are not purposely aiming for their feet when they shoot down certain projects that conspiracy theorists insist they're suppressing "out of greed." The long and short of it is that greed is a motivator to earn profits, not to suppress them, so the conspiracy theorists have a very faulty argument. I'm still very skeptical about the practicality of EVs for myself -- I have never lived the EV-ideal situation: Only once for a few years did I live in a home with an electrified garage, but that was a hack-job by a previous owner, not up to code for charging an EV. Most of the time I've had to park in an open apartment lot or out on a driveway. I also have usually had long commutes, and frequently minimum of 4hr-ea.-way trips back home for Christmas and summer, where getting a charge on my relatives' circuits would be out of the question. The whole infrastructure has to change to make EVs practical for everyone. I also question the shift of one form of pollution to another, and dependence on one foreign entity for raw materials to another/others. At some point, I expect that any form of fuel will draw the ire of environmentalists.

Much more long term thinking needs to be done before all these decisions of what direction to take should be made.

Improve batteries, lower the prices, then electric MIGHT have a chance.

Ford seems to be making good decisions. But hybrids and electrics are still way to expensive for me. The payout is longer than the expected life of the batteries, then look out for that one in the pocket book.

Don't give a dam about Ford or any other car company on their hybrids or any of their other highly overpriced new cars. Will not ever consider any of them until they become more affordable.

Hey donkoak, you said your piece by posting the article, now it's our turn. So sit back and enjoy! Ford is taking their time because, unlike most liberals they don't just jump into something halfcocked and clueless, they take the time to understand the ramifications of what they say and do before engaging their mouths. It will be years and I mean years before our grid could handle electric cars in the first place, and if others hadn't noticed we are in a recession unmatched in recent memory of most Americans. And the auto industry is not going to save us from this brainless administration's inept attempt to save the economy. It hasn't gotten one thing right yet, what makes anyone so sure they know what their talking about now? Electric cars are a pipe dream, designed for those who can afford to smoke the good stuff, on the east and west coast,or europe. Average americans need not apply!

Actually Ford is ahead of the times and taking a wait see approach like any smart business would. Electric cars are the vehicles of the future and always WILL be.

I like the Volt concept but would like to see at least 100 miles on battery power and after that the gas generator would kick in for unlimited miles. For those with short commutes, gas would never be needed.

oldiesman New York "At least they didn't turn and run to the Government and take there crumbs. My hat is off to FORD go baby."
What are you smokin'? FORD showed up at the table TWICE (the first time via their own expensive corporate jet), with their greedy paws WIDE OPEN... until they found out that there were NO handouts, but LOANS... AND the conditions that they had to open their accounting books to the auditors. They backed-off pretty quick then. That's the kind of company your hat goes off to? Shame on you.

Now Ford appears to have the approach I would prefer. Different electrics for different need and a 700 mile range would be good enough for me. I would think that if anyone can do it, it would obviously be Ford right here in the USA.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the vehicles are available. I see Ford will be the only manufacturer serving the battery EV, hybrid, and conventional markets.

The hybrid is the sensible approach that is already being marketed and further developed. Folks ought to quit demonizing realistic solutions to problems ... especially before "the problem" is clearly defined.
