E.P.A. to Study Chemicals Used to Tap Natural Gas

nytimes.com -- The Environmental Protection Agency sent letters to nine drilling companies on Thursday requesting detailed information about the chemicals contained in fluids used to crack open underground rock formations in the hunt for oil and natural gas.

The move is part of the federal agency’s preparations for a long-term scientific study of the effects of the practice, known as hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” on drinking water and public health.

“Natural gas is an important part of our nation’s energy future, and it’s critical that the extraction of this valuable natural resource does not come at the expense of safe water and healthy communities,” the E.P.A. administrator, Lisa P. Jackson, said in a statement.

The agency asked the companies to respond to its request within seven days a

We still have to find a way to reign in the EPA. The current head of the EPA is Carol M. Browner, first appointed by Pres. Clinton in 1993. She is the longest reigning head of the EPA. Many of the miscalculations have been made under her watch. This would include the continuance of the incorrect fuel mileage figures throughout the EPA's history.
She is currently known as Pres. Obama's "Climate Czar" and a known socialist, ref. link below:

Not unlike Colonel Sanders; there are numerous secret sauces. Each one may have to be disclosed to the feds; but not to become public knowledge. Time will tell; they want our hydrocarbon fuels' costs to rise so their alternative options are less unfavorable.

Honda0105, thanks for the clarification. I guess there'd be MSDS on Coke, but not the formula and the interactions. Didn't think about it

traindude: the problem is that many of the chemical used are "trade secrets" - so there are MSDS sheets, but none that show interactive issues. And the fracking juice is secret, so there's no studies done except by the fox in the hen house.

Government involvement is reasonably needed in public health matters. Look at what happened most recently in Communist China, a totalitarian state that opened up its markets and had a far freer system than ours: Dairy farmers and milk producers poisoned their own children, our children and pets. I'm friends with a couple who adopted a little girl from China before the practice was known about -- she has a kidney disorder, most likely from ingesting tainted milk. We need to know the affects of chemicals added to our water supply. I teach Special Ed -- do you want to send your children and grandchildren to my classroom for a preventable disorder?

fracking has been going on for 10-20 years, these studies have already been done, so who is going to be stuffing their pockets with the money for the study that was already done?

Oh brother another useless governmental study that waste taxpayer money and then makes recommendations that companies are allowed to ignore.

Looks like they are getting ready to ban something. I guess that means no more natural gas for us. So much for natural gas being green.

The only long term effects the government cares about is the effect on the economy... not the environment. So science has to play the game of getting what they want in terms of what the government wants..

The companies should produce MSDS for the workers to assure there are no health issues from being exposed to the materials. And the MSDS sheets do address the concerns about the fluids being trade secrets.

Another investigation by another governmental agency. Now wait and see what happens because of the California natural gas explosion. We'll have investigations back to back.

Focus2 says: Water could become precious and more costly than gasoline if we have to buy safe water.

And why wouldn't that be a great situation for these corporations? Once they are done with gas they will make money all over again with water.

Americans, keep going with your idiotic short-sighted ways and you will soon be a third world country - raped and plundered by the rich and powerful while ordinary people are left destitute.

But don't let it bother you. Keep voting for and supporting the very same scumbags who make all this possible.

"Good luck trying to find out what they use. They claim it is a trade secret and they intend to keep it that way so they can't be sued. They are even protected and supported by the GOP. I have been contacted lately by e-mail by an energy group to write congress for support of their policy on getting at gas reserves. I have no objection to them getting to the gas as long as they don't pollute our water tables. Water could become precious and more costly than gasoline if we have to buy safe water."

Haven't you seen the connection yet? They pollute the water table, they strategically buy water rights, cost of CLEAN water skyrockets way beyond oil prices and they laugh all the way to the bank... again. It's their dream come true.

Could this have a relationship to the to event that BP has with its record breaking oil spill. The EPA could have a increase to to secure this issues.

have they asked yet HOW TOXIC are the chemicals used to contain and "clean up" the Gulf oil spill, and how much toxic contamination resulted from the PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION when they tried to burn oil off the surface ?

They do years and years of studies before any drilling starts and now two decades later EPA wants to know whats the MSDS will tell them. The question should be what did the EPA do with the detailed information of their own study in 2004 WHICH THIS WAS FIND TO BE SAFE?????
